Why all the fuss about SMB / SME firms?

How big is an SMB / SME?

Depending on which vendor you ask, a small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) or small to medium-sized business (SMB) is defined as a company that has between one and 500 employees.

The DTI, which states that to qualify as an SME, a company must meet at least two of the following conditions:

  • Average number of employees is less than 250
  • Maximum turnover of £40m
  • Maximum balance sheet total of £27m

According to the latest government statistics, in 2001 there were 3.7m businesses in the UK, of which 99 per cent were SMEs. However, the vast majority were firms with less than 50 employees. In 2001, only 28,000 medium-sized companies (50-250 employees) were registered with Companies House.
