The practice of connecting older software applications which a business still relies upon to new but incompatible software applications it is currently deploying. These older applications might typically reside on mainframe or mid-range computer systems, and are retained either because it is not cost effective or technically possible to migrate them, are better suited to performance requirements or perhaps just because they have plenty of life left in them. Another common reason is the signing of a contract with a new supply chain partner who uses different systems to yourself and wishes to trade electronically.
